Montrose Memorial Hospital rated as a High Performing Hospital for Knee Replacements
According to U.S. News magazine, U.S. hospitals will admit an estimated 33 million patients in the next 12 months. More than 1 million will have a knee or hip replaced and about 400,000 will undergo heart bypass surgery. Any hospital should be able to treat such relatively commonplace patients successfully, and many do – but not all. The Best Hospitals procedures and conditions ratings in US News show consumers how well their local hospitals stand up to scrutiny in those six procedures and conditions and three others. Your local, top 20 community hospital was rated as a High Performing hospital for Knee Replacements for 2016. More than 4,500 hospitals were evaluated to generate with this rating.
Montrose Memorial Hospital performed 193 Joint Replacements in 2016. The well-oiled machine of Orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and others who make up our Joint Replacement program are fantastic. As Cathy White, knee replacement patient said, “The easy decision was to have my surgery in Montrose. Staying close to loved ones was a factor of course, but there were numerous, fact- based reasons for choosing MMH, including its super low infection rate, consistent high scores for overall cleanliness, and a top-notch staff dedicated to patient safety and high quality care. Especially important, Montrose has an incredibly experienced team of surgeons at Western Slope Orthopaedics. We live in an area where lots of people participate in an active lifestyle, many jobs contribute to work related injuries and the number of retirees requiring repairs and replacements seems to increase daily. Add in the flow of high profile CEO’s and celebrities who recreate nearby and come here to get put back together when injured and my decision was a no brainer. Our docs have seen it all.”
The Joint Replacement program includes an educational class prior to surgery where you meet others who will undergo surgery and therapy similar to yours, as well as nurses and therapists who will take care of you and help you on the road to recovery. The class includes everything about your procedure and what to expect during your stay.
What does this high performing rating mean? As printed in US News, an overall rating of high performing indicates a hospital was significantly better than the national average in a given procedure or condition. While evaluating the procedure of knee replacements, 10 to 20 percent of the evaluated hospitals typically fell into the high performing tier and another 10 to 20 percent were rated below average.
MMH’s knee replacement high performing score was based on multiple data categories, including; preventing complications after knee replacement, preventing prolonged hospitalizations, preventing infections after knee replacements, the number of patients and the patients experience. The methodology used to measure patient experience is based on publicly reported data found at www.hospitalcompare.gov. They looked at one measure where discharged patients rated MMH in seven areas related to nurses’ and doctors’ communication skills, staff responsiveness, pain management, medication harm, discharge information and help in engaging patients in their recovery.
MMH is honored to receive this recognition and also understand it’s only one way to evaluate our hospital. There are many companies and programs that rate hospitals in a variety of ways and we encourage you to review many of them before making your choice. We are proud of the care provided at MMH and being recognized as a High Performing Hospital for Knee Replacements is an honor we are thrilled to receive.
