Knock Out Parkinson’s

Mountain View Therapy at Montrose Memorial Hospital has a new and innovative program that helps create an new and healthier future for patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement with more than 200,000 cases diagnosed in the US per year. In Montrose County over 820 residents are directly impacted by Parkinson’s disease and at least another 1,000 are indirectly touched. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease start gradually, sometimes starting with a small tremor in one hand and gradually expand to slow movement, stiffness, and loss of balance. This movement disorder affects people’s ability to perform common, daily activities and the symptoms become worse over time and can include sleep problems, anxiety, depression, fatigue and others.

Multiple studies show that participants who consistently participate in non-contact boxing programs may experience improvement in their symptoms. Knock Out Parkinson’s combines many aspects of what Parkinson’s patients need to maintain their abilities including strength training, balance exercises, aerobic movement and the natural camaraderie exercise courses generate to address the most common symptoms. Our two-day-a-week course is designed and monitored by our highly trained physical therapists, exercise physiologists and exercise professionals. Participants do not punch each other; but employ boxing sequences, punching bags and personal mitt striking training sequences. The overall goal of the class is to enhance the quality of life for those living with the effects of Parkinson’s.

Knock Out Parkinson’s participants have expressed enhanced feelings of wellness and improved quality of life as they are empowered to better manage their symptoms. They also enjoy the social, supportive and fun opportunity to be with people who are going through the same thing. The workouts encourage optimism and bring hope into people’s lives, including the caregiver’s. The wife of a participant said, “I haven’t seen him laughing and this happy in a long time!”

If you are interested in Knocking Out Parkinson’s, the class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:45 – 1:45 at the Mountain View Therapy Wellness Center at 815 S. 4th Street. The cost is $60 per month and you can join any time. Please call 970.252.2646 to learn more.
