3D Mammography Coming to Montrose Memorial Hospital

Women understand the importance of getting an annual mammogram. We hear about it through the media, sports teams don pink to heighten awareness and care providers remind us yearly that we need to make an appointment. Since one in eight women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, the value of early detection can’t be stated enough.

MMH will soon have the best technology available to help detect breast cancer. Our 3D mammography is called True Breast Tomosynthesis and the technology offers a wide-angle view which means the radiologist’s view is enlarged and the clarity is enhanced. True Breast Tomosynthesis takes 25 images during a 50 degree arc around the breast–and the images are then compiled into a three-dimensional picture of the breast. In comparison, a 2D mammogram takes two images. Although the technology is greatly enhanced, the experience for women is identical to the 2D mammogram.

A simple mammogram can detect cancer early, when it is most treatable. Even though this is well known, almost one third of American women currently do not get regular mammograms–and this percentage is even higher in our region. Because the image clarity of 3D mammography leads to more accurate breast cancer detection, women are diagnosed with fewer false positives and they don’t experience the worry of follow-up tests. Three dimensional mammography is also particularly helpful for women who have dense breast tissue. This improved detection can lead to greater peace of mind.

The True Breast Tomosynthesis will be available at MMH in the near future. Call and schedule your appointment today at 970.252.2540. We urge ALL women to make the time in their busy schedule for this very important screening.
